Watch Out for Poorly-Disclosed Checked-Baggage Fees

US CapitolThe U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has declined to implement a proposed fee-transparency rule. The rule would have required airlines to “disclose to consumers the fees for a first checked bag, a second checked bag, and a carry-on bag when providing airfare information.”

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao stated that “[W]e do not believe that departmental action is necessary to meet this objective at this time.”

The rule was first proposed in 2014, but was not enacted during the Obama administration. Now the Trump administration has laid it to rest.

If you are purchasing an airline ticket online, be sure to verify that the final price, right before you authorize the charge, is what you expect.
