Beyond Global Entry, New “Mobile Passport” Program Speeds U.S. Customs Re-Entry

Global Entry has been almost indispensable for several years to Americans who frequently fly overseas. With a Global Entry registration, Americans can bypass the lengthy lines at passport control when re-entering the United States.

Now, the U.S. government has created “Mobile Passport” as an alternative to Global Entry. With Mobile Passport on your smartphone (iPhone or Android), you can get through immigration just as quickly as with Global Entry.

One big advantage of Global Entry is that it automatically grants PreCheck status, while Mobile Passport does not. On the other hand, Global Entry costs $100 for 5 years and requires an interview, while Mobile Passport is free and no interview is needed.

At this time Mobile Passport is only available at 4 airports (none in New York City), but that number is sure to grow in the future.
